DSL Has The Most Explosive Growth Rate World Wide (go back)High speed DSL (digital subscriber line) is high speed internet connections through your telephone line instead of high speed cable or a modem. About 25 million users around the world signed up for DSL services in 2003, bringing total subscribers to 62 million, according to a report by consulting firm Point Topic done on behalf of the DSL Forum. Japan leads the way with 9.2 million subscribers, followed by the U.S. at 8.2 million and China with 7.8 million (5.6 million of whom signed on last year, giving China the highest growth rate at 354%).
DSL Has The Lowest Cost For High Speed Internet Connections (go back)That type of growth is because it is proving to be the most effective and stable kind of high speed internet connection and comes at a low price without the problem of increased numbers of users diminishing the speed. DSL comes at a far lower and affordable cost than other forms of high speed connection. In the last year some of the big DSL providers have been cutting their prices such as SBC, Verizon Communications, the largest Baby Bell, and BellSouth. Also, when you calculate the cost of your current Internet Service Provider ($23.95) and the cost of a second phone line at $30.00 which you will no longer need, and then add on the effect of stress and large amounts of time and money wasted waiting for downloads it becomes a no brainer.
DSL Requires No Extra Phone Line or Wiring Cost For Installation (go back)There is no need for an extra phone line or wiring as phone lines have a very small percentage of capacity used for voice conversations. Human voices, speaking in normal conversational tones, can be carried in a frequency range of 0 to 3,400 Hertz (cycles per second) and the wires themselves have the potential to handle frequencies up to several million Hertz in most cases. Since DSL uses digital data instead of the old analog data that most televisions still use today this means DSL can safely use a large capacity of the telephone line with a great quantities of data. With DSL you can still use the phone line to speak to someone and leave your high speed DSL internet connection on for as long as you want and there is no diminishing of the connection. DSL Has The Highest Consistent Connection Speeds (go back)Most homes and small business are connected to an asymmetrical DSL (ADSL) line. ADSL divides the available frequencies in a line in such a way to give users the greatest benefit. The frequencies are continually dividing into what benefits the most users. This is based on the assumption that the connection speed for the user should be three to four times faster from the internet to the user than from the user back to the internet. ADSL technology usually provides speeds over 50 times faster than a high speed modem which is around 56 Kbps. The speeds offered today are 1.5 Mbps downstream and upstream varying between 64 and 640 Kbps which means the upload speed is about 2.3 times slower most of the time.
DSL Connection Performance Is Not Decreased By New Users (go back)One advantage of ADSL over cable is that the provider receiving the connections from customers uses a DSL Access Multiplexer (DSLAM) to receive customer connections. This basically takes all the individual user connections and aggregates them into a single high capacity connection on the internet. This technology basically allows each user to have a dedicated connection back to the DSLAM so that user's won't see performance decrease as new users are added. On the other hand, because cable-modem users generally share a network loop that runs through a neighborhood, adding users means lowering performance in many instances.
DSL Offer Greater Privacy Protection(go back)Also, because Cable uses a shared bandwidth technology users are more exposed to privacy concerns.
DSL Is Limited To User Location(go back)High speed DSL is a distance sensitive technology that will only perform well up to a distance of 18,000 feet (5,460 meters) which is 3.4 miles because as the connection length increases the signal quality decreases. At the extremes of the distance it is possible for ADSL customers to have speeds far below the promised maximum although today most ADSL providers place a lower limit on the distance to keep their good reputation for quality and service. This would also be true for telephone if it were not for amplifiers called loading coils that boost the voice signals. If there is a loading coil between your telephone line and the telephone company then you will not be able to use ADSL because the loading coil will prevent it and you are also too far away. A few other reasons that can disqualify from being able to use high speed DSL is the use of too many bridge taps which are side extensions to other customers between you and the central DSLAM. Also, if a portion of your telephone circuit comes through fibe-optic cables then ADSL signals cannot pass through because they cannot pass through a line where voice conversations are being converted form analog back to digital.
