I recently bought a sky box (white/ silverish) with a white viewing card. i can watch some channels but wanted sky sports. for this i'm told i have buy a new viewing card for 20 quids plus another one off charge on top of monthly charge. they couldn't activate the card that came with box saying it was registered to someone else. i bought the box from a sunday market. i can't take it back. if anyone is a sky expert please help

Don't need to be a Sky expert to answer this - of course the card was registered to someone else (the original owner). Sure, you'll get the free Sky channels, but Sky Sports isn't one of them. Unless you know someone who can hack these things, you're gonna have to grit your teeth and pay for that new viewing card. You might even need to pay for a whole new package - after all, you really pay for the service, and as far as I'm aware, the hardware is included in that service.
